LOCKLETTER

AAUW  Lock Haven Branch

Lock Haven, PA

Diane Whitaker, President

Editor:  Bobbie Way

President’s Message

Dear AAUW Members,

This year of AAUW is about at an end.  We have had great programs; enjoyed writing letters and selecting books for our community project – Write Read Write; are in the midst of having a great book sale in our new location; and looking forward to another year helping at the LHU Children & Youth program; awarding a high school senior at CMHS and Bucktail HS; and presenting scholarships to county women returning to college or furthering higher education.

The newsletter has kept us informed of events and our telephone callers have reminded us of upcoming meetings and activities.  I thank all board members for their help and look forward to working with the upcoming new board.

Soon we will honor both our Outstanding Woman of the Year and Emerging Star.  Also, we will induct our new officers.  We hope you will join us at the Madison Restaurant on May 6.

President Diane

State Conference News

A great many ideas came from this year’s state conference held in Carlisle.

Branches were asked the following:

  • Look at our branch – what are our branch demographics; are we mission based or social; what our goals are; how do we retain as well as recruit members; what are our strengths; get out in the community; and accept your branch for what it is.

  • The  mission statement was changed to add the word philanthropy.

  • AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.

  • We received a certificate for being the 8th of 10 top branches in per capita giving of $6.24 per member for Legal Advocacy.

  • I have been appointed to the State Nominating Committee looking for members interested in being Finance; Membership VP; and Secretary. If interested please let me know.

  • The Bylaws passed with considerable discussion on Membership voting.

  • Leadership Meeting:  Sat July 17, 2010 from 9:00-3:30 at the Country Cupboard in Lewisburg.  All who would like to attend please see me.  There will be no charge to the members.  It would be nice to have a car load.

President Diane

ANNUAL LOCK HAVEN BRANCH AAUW SCHOLARSHIPS

The applications for our AAUW Branch annual scholarships are now available at Ross Library.  Applicants should ask at the main desk.  Members are asked to help spread the word.  If you can post one of our flyers, call or e-mail me, and I will send you one.  I will have some flyers at the Branch meeting in April.  The Branch guidelines for eligibility are listed below.

Both undergraduate and graduate scholarships are available to women who are Clinton County residents either (A) at the time of submitting their applications, or (B) if currently a student, immediately before the start of the current degree program.

The aim of the undergraduate scholarships is to help women whose education has been interrupted and who clearly wish to follow a vocation for which a four-year college degree or even a higher degree will be required.  The undergraduate scholarship is named in honor of Pam Wagner Piette, formerly of Lock Haven, and a supporter of AAUW.  The graduate scholarship is named in honor of the late Marilyn Gardner, a past President of the Lock Haven AAUW Branch and past Board member of the Pennsylvania Division of AAUW.

An applicant for an undergraduate scholarship must be at least three years beyond high school graduation (i.e., a non-traditional student) and accepted for the year 2010-2011 at an accredited college or university in a Bachelor's degree program.  In addition, she will already have earned at least a quarter of the credits required for a four year degree.

An applicant for a graduate scholarship must have been accepted at an accredited college or university in a graduate degree program, and must meet the above residency requirement.

Applications are to be submitted by June 1, 2010.  Please note that the deadline for submission is firm.  The scholarship committee's decision will be announced soon after July 15.  For further information, call Elizabeth S. Brobst at 769-6895.

Members, please spread the word about our scholarships.  Many recipients tell us that they found out about the scholarships by word-of-mouth.  We also get the word out through local media and posters.
