LOCKLETTER

AAUW  Lock Haven Branch

Lock Haven, PA

Diane Whitaker, President

Editor:  Bobbie Way

President’s Message

Dear AAUW Members,

The month of March is thought of as Women’s History Month, and so for our March meeting, we had guest speaker, Lou Bernard of the Heisey Museum, speak on women of Clinton County beginning with the first woman presidential candidate, Victoria Woodhull, of Beech Creek.

We continue on a historical theme for our April book discussion month when member Gerry Cierpilowski talks about “Karolina Remembers” the biography of her “aunt” living in Poland and Russia during the days of WWII.  The Ross Library has a copy if you would like to read it before the meeting and Gerry will have copies for sale at the meeting.

Also at our April meeting, considered our annual meeting, we will elect the next years officers – Pres. Diane Whitaker; Program Co V-Pres – Laura Long & Roberta Doyle; Sec. Amy Carroll; Treas. Carol Hildebrand; Membership Chair Carol Pollard.

If you haven’t signed up for the Annual Book Sale from April 18-24, call Toni 726-6410.  We do ask for a fee if you cannot help at the sale. Remember, the book sale is located at the “OLD LH HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM” on West Main Street.  All funds go into the Scholarship Fund for Clinton County women.  The scholarship applications, undergraduate and graduate, are now available at the main desk of Ross Library.  Let your friends and neighbors know.

All participants agreed that the “Write Read Write” program was another successful literacy project.  Roberta & Laura delivered the books and by May we hope to have letters from the students.

Spring will be here when you receive this newsletter – Take one Inspiration a day and feel great all week (Woman’s World, 1/17/2006)

Day 1 – “Putting others first doesn’t mean you come last.”

Day 2 – “Great things happen when you let them.”

Day 3 – “There is always someone special in your life:  You!”

Day 4 -- “Breathe deeper. Laugh longer. Dream bigger. Live happier!

Day 5 -- “Tell stress to get lost.”

Day 6 – “The time is right to tell someone how you feel.”

Day 7 – “You’re better than good enough.  You’re Great!”

Till we meet in April,

President Diane

Meeting

Local Author
F. Gerry Cierpilowski

Rebecca Gross Room
Ross Library

Hostesses:  Bonnie Rossamilia & Roberta Doyle

At our April 1st meeting at Ross Library,
Gerry Cierpilowski will share with us her wonderful book, "Karolina Remembers"

I purchased my autographed copy at D Dashem Books.  Laura

Gerry provides us with the following bibliographic factoids:

  • Born and raised in a Polish/Italian neighborhood in Detroit, MI.

  • Attended a neighborhood Catholic grade school and high school.

  • Received a BA from Marygrove College in Detroit.

  • Taught math in the Detroit Public School District.

  • Moved to Lock Haven in 1970 with her husband, Jerry, who had been hired at LHU.

  • Mother of three children and a grandmother of two.

  • Earned her Masters degree and Reading Specialist Certification in 1989 from Bloomsburg University.

  • Taught in the Title 1 Reading Program in the Bellefonte and Keystone Central School Districts.

"While Karolina Remembers started out as my aunt's memoir for family members, after interviewing her extensively and sharing her story with others, including some historians, I realized that the deportation of 1,700,000 Polish citizens from eastern Poland to Siberia at the beginning of WWII was practically unknown.  No one I spoke with knew about it.  That's when I decided I wanted to open it up to a wider audience."

WRITE – READ -- WRITE

The books have been distributed to the 4th and 5th grade classes at Lamar Elementary School in Salona.  The wrapped books were beautiful.  What a happy and appreciative group of kids.  Great teachers, too.  I have a slide show that I can send each of you.  You can see it at the April meeting.  The second letters will be available for the May dinner meeting.  Laura

ANNUAL LOCK HAVEN BRANCH AAUW SCHOLARSHIPS

The applications for our AAUW Branch annual scholarships are now available at Ross Library.  Applicants should ask at the main desk.  Members are asked to help spread the word.  If you can post one of our flyers, call or e-mail me, and I will send you one.  I will have some flyers at the Branch meeting in April.  The Branch guidelines for eligibility are listed below.

Both undergraduate and graduate scholarships are available to women who are Clinton County residents either (A) at the time of submitting their applications, or (B) if currently a student, immediately before the start of the current degree program.

The aim of the undergraduate scholarships is to help women whose education has been interrupted and who clearly wish to follow a vocation for which a four-year college degree or even a higher degree will be required.  The undergraduate scholarship is named in honor of Pam Wagner Piette, formerly of Lock Haven, and a supporter of AAUW.  The graduate scholarship is named in honor of the late Marilyn Gardner, a past President of the Lock Haven AAUW Branch and past Board member of the Pennsylvania Division of AAUW.

An applicant for an undergraduate scholarship must be at least three years beyond high school graduation (i.e., a non-traditional student) and accepted for the year 2010-2011 at an accredited college or university in a Bachelor's degree program.  In addition, she will already have earned at least a quarter of the credits required for a four year degree.

An applicant for a graduate scholarship must have been accepted at an accredited college or university in a graduate degree program, and must meet the above residency requirement.

Applications are to be submitted by June 1, 2010.  Please note that the deadline for submission is firm.  The scholarship committee's decision will be announced soon after July 15.  For further information, call Elizabeth S. Brobst at 769-6895.

Members, please spread the word about our scholarships.  Many recipients tell us that they found out about the scholarships by word-of-mouth.  We also get the word out through local media and posters.
