LOCKLETTER

AAUW  Lock Haven Branch

Lock Haven, PA

Diane Whitaker, President

Editor:  Bobbie Way

President’s Message

Dear AAUW Members,

We continued the health and wellness theme in February when Richard Wykoff spoke to us about his experiences with Stem Cell Treatments and then we ended the meeting with fellowship as board members treated all to soup, salad, sandwiches, and dessert.  Thanks to Laura and Roberta for arranging this afternoon.

We will go into March celebrating “National Women’s History Month” with guest speaker Lou Bernard, curator of Heisey Museum, who will speak about local women in history on Saturday March 6 at Ross Library.  Another exciting upcoming meeting I am sure you won’t want to miss – and bring along a friend.

March is also the month we celebrate spring; the season between winter and summer; the time of year when life begins again in nature.  So take a walk and listen - what new sounds might be heard; watch for the daffodil and robin - both sure signs spring is here; and try a new book, author, or craft that you have always thought of doing but didn’t have the time.

Till we meet in March,                                                                                                                                          President Diane

Write – Read – Write

Write Read Write books are to be brought in to the March meeting or brought to my home at 980 Center Street by March 8.  I want to get the books to the school before they start testing, which will take up their time and limit their opportunity to get the books read.  Laura

MINUTES

Lock Haven Branch AAUW

Branch Meeting of February 6, 2010

Ross Library

In attendance were 11 members.  President Diane Whitaker called the meeting to order at 11:40 a.m. following a presentation by Rich Wykoff on stem cell therapy.

On a motion by Carol Hildebrand, the minutes of the last meeting were approved as printed in the Lockletter.  There was no fiscal officer’s report.

Membership:  Diane Whitaker announced that she has membership application forms to give to prospective members.

Book Sale:  Carol Hildebrand said that price and sort sessions will be held each Thursday morning.  She will contact Lock Haven University, the City of Lock Haven, and Immaculate Conception Church to discuss arrangements for parking during the book sale.

Write Read Write:  Laura Long distributed letters from the students participating in this year’s project.  Members were asked to bring their gift books to the March 6 branch meeting or to her house or to Ross Library before that date.  Forty-two students will receive books this year.

Blood Mobile:  Pat Burd reported that the Red Cross contact person she had for the Blood Mobile no longer has that job, so she was not able to determine whether our branch will be asked to sponsor a blood drive this year.  She will wait for someone from the Red Cross to contact her with additional information.

Scholarship Committee:  Diane Whitaker reported that the application requirements for the undergraduate scholarship have been revised for clarity.

Children’s Festival:  Diane Whitaker received a request for volunteers from Lisa May, food coordinator for the April 24 Children’s Festival.  Members agreed to provide two teams of three people to work from noon until 4:00 on that day.  Volunteers will be asked to sign up at a later date.

The next branch meeting will take place on Saturday, March 6 at 10:00 am.  Lou Bernard from the Clinton County Historical Museum will speak.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:15.

Amy Carroll, Secretary

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

International Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.  In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday.  The first IWD was in 1911. It followed unanimous agreement at an International Conference of Working Women the previous year.
