President’s Message
Good Day Members,
We are off to a great start with our
meetings. Everyone had praises for the abundant selection
of good foods at our first meeting hosted at LH Extended
Care. We met the new family social coordinator, Beverly
Schmidt; but best of all was meeting our scholarship
winners. And, if you didn't leave early you had a chance to
see Sarah, the newest member of the Long Family.
Congratulations Michele and Joel!
Our first task has been taken on by
Linda and the Bylaws Committee who are working hard at
updating the Chapter Bylaws. Look for more information at
the next meeting.
Now, mark your calendar for October 1,
7 p.m., at the Clinton County Arts Council on
Main Street. We will have Matt Connor as our guest speaker.
His topic will be on the Ghost Walk and other local ghost
stories. You won't want to miss it. Michelle is our
hostess.
See you Oct. 1!

2009-2010 Scholarship Recipients |
|
The Lock Haven Branch of AAUW has
awarded educational aid for 2009-10 to four outstanding women.
Two of the awardees are in graduate school, and two are
undergraduates.
Recipients of this year’s
Undergraduate Awards are Kristi M. Byrne and Jeanney Wharton.
Kristi’s goal is a BS in Occupational Therapy from Penn
College. She has a husband and three children, ages 14, 12, and
9.
Jeanney
Wharton’s goal is a BFA with specialization in Graphic Design/
Online Design at Lock Haven University. Jeanney helped to
revive the Clinton County Arts Council and served on the
committee which originated Lock Haven’s Friday Night Art Walks.
The graduate awards are named in
memory of the late Marilyn Gardner, a Lock Haven Branch past
president and division (state) past president. One of this
year’s two awardees, Michelle Bates, is pursuing the M.Ed in
Educational Leadership at Lock Haven University, to prepare for
a position in school administration. Michelle’s children are
17, 19, and 22.
A second Marilyn Gardner Graduate
Award goes to Julie Story, an instructor in the Department of
Academic Development and Counseling at Lock Haven University.
Julie is pursuing the D.Ed. degree in Educational Leadership,
with emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction, at the University
of Phoenix Online. Julie also won a Marilyn Gardner educational
aid award for the two previous years.
The Lock Haven Branch of AAUW is
grateful to Thrivent Financial, which matched $1000 of our Book
Sale dollars. Many thanks to all members and others who helped
at the Book Sale, with special thanks to Chairpersons Toni
Tomasi and Carol Hildebrand. Thanks also to the Educational Aid
Awards Committee members: Amy Carroll, Carol Hildebrand, Jackie
Whitling, Roberta Doyle, and Diane Whitaker. They worked
thoughtfully and diligently to assure that the awards were fair
and appropriate.
Most of the award recipients will
be able to attend the September dinner meeting. Please plan to
come and give them a warm welcome.

Latest News on Equal Pay for Men & Women
The
government’s new report on income, poverty, and health insurance
coverage shows that the wage gap between men and women working
full time remains stubbornly in place. In 2007, the average
woman made almost 78 cents for each dollar earned by her male
counterpart. According to newly released 2008 figures, that
number now stands at just over 77 cents for each dollar earned
by a man. Given the tough economic times, some might say that
women should be satisfied that the gap didn’t widen. However,
given that the wage gap has been stagnant over the past decade —
in good times and bad — AAUW sees this as a time for action.
AAUW
remains committed to passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act (S.
182/H.R. 12), a much-needed update to the Equal Pay Act of 1963.
Congress made an important statement earlier this year by
adopting the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act — the first bill
signed into law by President Barack Obama. But it’s only the
first step to fair pay. The Paycheck Fairness Act, along with
the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, will help create a climate in
which pay discrimination is not tolerated. The House has
already passed the measure, but the Senate needs to take up the
mantle. It’s time we strengthened the Equal Pay Act so that it
can finally live up to its name. |
