LOCKLETTER

AAUW  Lock Haven Branch

Lock Haven, PA

Diane Whitaker, President

Editor:  Bobbie Way

President’s Message

Dear AAUW Members,

Everyone is talking about tough times and the struggles we have at home, work, and in our clubs.  AAUW is right there too with the many changes that were brought out at our last meeting.  I hope that all members mailed in their surveys.  We will try to keep you informed of the changes.

At our last meeting, we had the opportunity to honor Bobbie Way as our Outstanding Woman of the Year. Congratulations, Bobbie!  Members also had a chance to meet the new incoming officers.  I am privileged to be working with Co-Vice President/Program Chairs Roberta Doyle and Laura Long, and Secretary Amy Carroll.  Continuing for another year are Treasurer Angela Black and Co-Membership Chairs JoAnne Hoberman and Michelle Long.  I haven’t had a chance to really talk to many committee chairs, but I hope I can continue to have the support of past chairs.  I will be calling during the months of June and July so that we will have up-to-date information in the Yearbook.

Enclosed in this newsletter is a survey to find out where members are willing to help (see below).  We have great ongoing projects like the annual book sale, blood drive, and the Write-Read-Write literacy program that are sure to continue.  Please respond to the survey and return via e-mail missmarple19@yahoo.com or snail mail to Diane Whitaker, PO Box 528, Beech Creek PA 16822 by June 15.  I know the turn around time is short, but your reply will help in the planning for next year.

Please remember dues are $70.00 of which $49.00 is deductible.  Dues can be sent to Angela Black, 28 South Summit Street, Lock Haven, PA 17745 by June 25.  To end, I would like to schedule a board meeting Wednesday, June 17, at 1 p.m. at Ross Library.

                                    Diane

I’ll be sending out a reminder mid-June.  Please make arrangements to get refreshments to the blood drive.  Anyone not listed as a worker that would like to help, please stop by during the day.  It was quite busy last year and we could always use a few more workers in the kitchen and as escorts.

We were over the anticipated number of donors last year.  We received a thank you from the Red Cross.

Thank you,

PAT BURD

Minutes of MAY 7, 2009
Meeting of the Lock Haven Branch of AAUW
Dutch Haven Restaurant

Members present were Andi Bennett, Ellie Zimmerman, Margaret Irwin, JoAnne Hobermann, Naomi Drezner, Carold Hildebrand, Lois Day, Pat Burd, Bobbie Way, Linda Frey, Amy Carroll, Diane Whitaker, Elizabeth Brobst, Laura Long, Toni Tomasi, Angela Black, Roberta Doyle, and Bonnie Rosamilia.  Guests were Melody Kownacki and Cindy Love.

Treasurer’s Report was given by Angela Black.  Gross receipts from the Book Sale totaled $5,366.96, with expenses of $250.  The current total in the checking and savings accounts is $8,797.12.  Report is attached.

Secretary’s minutes of the last meeting appeared in the Lockletter.  Any additions or corrections are to be given to Bonnie Rosamilia.

State Convention:  Andi and Linda Frey attended the State Convention held at the Country Cupboard in Lewisburg.  Andi asked Linda Frey to give an informational talk on what they learned.

  • General tone of the meeting was that the bylaw changes will definitely go through even though the majority of comments were against the changes.

  • Linda and Andi attended the Parliamentary Procedure workshop and they noted that in order to have a discussion, a motion must be on the table.

  • The proposed pilot project is that all dues are to be submitted on-line directly to national, who will send part back to the state and local branches.  At this time Pennsylvania is not part of this program.

  • Linda has information on Emerging Leader Intern, Student Leader, and Student Affiliation.  If interested, please contact her.

  • Dues will remain at $70 – neither national nor state has raised them.

Book Sale:  Toni Tomasi thanked everyone who helped with the Book Sale.  She especially wanted to thank Linda Frey, Margaret Irwin, Melody Kownacki, Ellie Zimmerman, Pat Burd, C. W. Pollard, Nadia, Betty Nelson, and Carol Hildebrand for all of their help with the Price & Sort sessions.  She also wanted to thank Bobbi Way for doing all of the necessary computer work on the project.  Toni also thanked those who donated money to pay the rent on the garage for storing the books for the Book Sale.  She reported that the books are being stored for free at Lock Haven University East (the old high school gymnasium).

Scholarships:  Elizabeth Brobst reported that no undergraduate applications had been returned to the library, and that three graduate applications had been taken.  She will put another article in The Express.  June 1 is the deadline and applications are available at the Ross Library.

AAUW Bylaw Changes:  Linda Frey reported on several of the upcoming bylaw changes:

  • Open membership – not only men may apply (as they can now), but also new members do not need to be a graduate of any post-high school educational institution.

  • Name change from American Association of University Women (AAUW) to just AAUW with no words for this acronym.

  • Branches can become a virtual branch with no physical meetings.

  • Need only have two members to a branch.

  • Only one national board instead of two as currently the policy.  Dues will become deductible.

A discussion of each of these followed with the consensus being that each member goes on the website or return a ballot expressing concern over these issues.

Write-Read-Write program:  Laura Long distributed the thank you letters from the Avis Elementary students who participated in the Write-Read-Write program.  She also had pictures on her camera to share.

Nominating Committee Report:  The Nominating Committee, consisting of Toni Tomasi and Linda Frey, offered the following slate of officers to be inducted this evening, and Andi Bennett conducted this induction.  The new officers are Diane Whitaker as President; Laura Long and Roberta Doyle as Co-Vice Presidents of Programs;  and Amy Carroll as Secretary.

Awards:  Andi announced that the Lock Haven Branch of AAUW was awarded a certificate for being in tenth place for per capita giving for the state.

Andi also received a certificate in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Lock Haven Branch.

Lois Day made the presentation of Outstanding Woman of the Year to her dear friend, Bobbie Way.  She was chosen by past Outstanding Women of the Year.

After pictures, presentation of flowers, and congratulations to new officers and Bobbie, the meeting commenced with our annual dinner and social time.

Bonnie Rosamilia, Secretary
