President Andi Bennett called the meeting to order at 7:10
at the third floor Community Room of the Ross Library. This
meeting is honoring the 40th Anniversary of the Lock Haven
Branch of AAUW and those charter members who were
instrumental in starting this branch. In addition, this
meeting will recognize five women of distinction from
Clinton County in celebration of National Women’s Month.
Members present were Andi Bennett, Beth Brobst, C. W.
Pollard, Ellie Zimmerman, JoAnne Hoberman, Betty Nelson,

Women of Clinton County: Maria Boileau, Bobbi Jo Simcox,

Before the meeting, recognition was given to the five
charter members of the Lock Haven Branch. These charter
members, Elizabeth Brobst, JoAnne Hoberman, Margaret Irwin,

participants in this local branch. Andi Bennet introduced
the charter members who were present and gave each a corsage
of white roses. Beth Brobst and JoAnne Hoberman, shared
anecdotes about the beginning of the branch and how each
became involved with AAUW. This served as a celebration of
the 40th Anniversary of the Lock Haven Branch of AAUW.
Diane Whitaker then presented a history of Women’s History
month. March 8 is known as International Women’s Day with
the entire month of March as Women’s History month. In
recognition of the outstanding accomplishments of women of
Clinton County, the Lock Haven Branch of AAUW has selected
five women who have made significant contributions to our
county community. Each of these women was presented with a
bouquet of red roses and a certificate honoring her as a
2009 Distinguished Woman of Clinton County. Diane read a
history of each woman’s accomplishments and each woman was
honored with an ovation. These five women of distinction
are (in alphabetical order) Maria Boileau, Julie Brennan,
Susanne Foust, Dr. Betty Schantz, and Bobbi Jo Simcox.
A
short general meeting followed the celebrations.
Diane Whitaker reminded members that the next meeting would
be on April 2, 2009, at the Great Island Presbyterian
Church. This would be the book talk about The Time
Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Members are asked to
bring any questions about the changes to the Bylaws to this
meeting. A list of unanswered questions will be created and
taken to the national meetings for answers.
Beth Brobst spoke about the scholarship applications. She
distributed posters advertising the scholarships and a
sign-up sheet for locations. The LAF envelope was passed.
Carol Hildebrand said that Thrivant has granted our branch
$1,000 towards our scholarships for this year. She has
taken the liberty of thanking them for their generosity.
Bonnie will send a letter of congratulations to Kelly
Hastings who was recently named Superintendent of the
Keystone Central School District. This is another way to
celebrate the contributions of women to our community.
Toni Tomasi and Carol Hildebrand said that the Book Sale
pricing and sorting is coming along nicely. Toni
distributed a sign-up sheet for workers at the sale.
Donations were picked up from State College and they hope to
get more in the future. A discussion was held concerning a
book sale by The Express which will be around the same time
as our sale.
Laura Long collected Write-Read-Write packages to be
distributed to the students at Avis Elementary School fourth
and fifth grades. She had three bags filled with colorfully
decorated books and letters to be distributed to students.
JoAnne Hoberman and Roberta Doyle both volunteered to help
Laura deliver the books to Avis Elementary School.
Andi reminded all who are interested that a Board meeting
will be held on Thursday, March 19, at 5:00 at the Ross
Library.
After the meeting was adjourned, a social time was held. A
40th Anniversary cake, ice cream, brownies, and drinks were
provided. Photographs were taken of the Distinguished Women
