Musings from Andie

Hi Ya All Ladies of the AAUW,

I hope you are feeling good, somewhat good or at least perky! (With this weather - who knows?)  I was very pleased to see all of you there in February.  The program was fascinating.  It makes you want to hop a plane and go!  I hope most of you can come to see who we picked for our Women of Note in the county.  (Only our program VP knows for sure.)

I must tell you, I am taking over Publicity Policy chair when Diane is our new President.  We just need the rest of you to help.  Don't forget your write-read-write books.  D. Dashem gives us 10% off.

And with that I'll close.

Roger, Wilco, Over & Out!

                                                Andie

Minutes of FEBRUARY 7, 2009
Meeting of the Lock Haven Branch of AAUW

President Andi Bennett called the meeting to order at 10:00 at the third floor Community Room of the Ross Library.  Carol Hildebrand and JoAnn Bowes who visited Rwanda, Africa, conducted the program.  Their slide presentation was about their trip to see the Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda.  Carol showed pictures of wildlife, as well as the gorilla, and JoAnn spoke of the culture in the area showing pictures of the children, families and such events as women learning to weave baskets, going for water and working a tea plantation.

Members present were Andi Bennett, C. W. Pollard, Margaret Irwin, Pat Burd, Laura Long, Diane Whitaker, Angela Black, Amy Carroll, Toni Tomasi, Carol Hildebrand, JoAnn Bowes, JoAnne Hoberman, and Roberta Doyle.  Perspective member Melody Kownacki, and guests Jayne K, Joyce Hudson, Barbara Hoffman and Charles Hildebrand were also present.

A general meeting began at 10:45.  Minutes were presented in The Lockletter.  Angela Black reported that the Treasurer’s report in savings was $1554.40 and in Checking $2677.88.

Upcoming Meetings:  Diane Whitaker reported our next meeting will be held on March 5, 2009, at Great Island Presbyterian Church, where we will honor 5 Distinguished Women of Clinton County in observance of Women’s History Month.  The list of women to be voted on was distributed and returned.  The list will be tallied, Andi will get a rose for each woman and Diane will create certificates.  She also reminded all members that the April meeting would be a book discussion on The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

Membership Committee:  JoAnne Hoberman  reported that information was given to several prospective members.  Also, that she and Michelle’s terms as co-Membership chairs would end in June. Michelle is expecting a baby in August – Congratulations to Michelle.

Price & Sort:  Toni Tomasi reported that help is needed on Thursday mornings at Ross Library 9-12.  She is also hopeful to have some more help from college students.  Flyers were passed out designating book drop offs at Ross Library and Woolrich.  Becky Gilbert’s storage on Hogan Blvd is available but AAUW would have to move if the building sold.  Renting a storage shed is $89.00/month.  No report from LHU storage.  Plans to stay at current location at this time.  Cost is $40.00/month.  Several members have donated $20.00 to help defray the cost of storage.  Any monetary donation to help with the storage cost is appreciated and should be sent to Angela Black.

No report on Diversity or Care and Concerns.

Publicity:  Diane is taking photos and C. W. Pollard is writing the articles.  Diane will place public service announcements on the radio for the book sale.

High School-LHUP Liaison:  Andi Bennett reported that she and C. W. Pollard are working on the liaison with the college and high school.  In March Andi Bennett is going to the high school to do a presentation on AAUW.

Write Read Write:  Laura Long distributed letters for this year’s Write Read Write Literacy program.  Avis Elementary School students are this year’s recipients.  Members should return a wrapped book and letter to the March meeting.  If a member is not attending in March, please see that Laura gets the books or drop off at Ross Library.  D. Dashem is offering a 10% discount on books purchased.

NEW BUSINESS

Toni Tomasi made a motion to place an ad in this year’s Millbrook Playhouse booklet at a cost of $150.00 for a quarter-page ad.  It is a means to advertise AAUW.  Seconded by Angela Black.  Passed.

Nominations:  A nominating committee is needed to find candidates for Vice President, Program Chair, and Secretary.  Comment made again that JoAnne Hoberman and Michelle Long held 2 years in Membership and so there is a question on whether Membership co-chairs are needed as well.  Toni will contact Linda Frye.

Toni Tomasi made a motion to give the Lock Haven Express $50.00 toward the Newspapers in Education Literacy Project.  Seconded by JoAnne Hoberman.  Passed.

Blood Drive:  Pat Burd reported on the upcoming Blood Drive to be held Tuesday, June 23, at the Masonic Temple.  Please mark the date on your calendar.  More information will follow.

Pat Burd made announcement on an upcoming TNT television program Feb. 7 on the Ben Carson story, a noted African American neurosurgeon.  He became the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital when he was 33 years old, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:10 on a motion by JoAnne Hoberman and seconded by Carol Hildebrand.  Several members went to Ruby Tuesday for a luncheon social following the meeting.

*Organization Name and Logo

*As a signal of our move to transform and unify our organization, the organization will be using a common logo of the stylized W and the acronym "AAUW"

The transition to priority use of the acronym began in the spring of 2007, as part of the Strategic Process.  The Association and EF boards affirmed the logo/acronym change at their joint meeting Feb 22, 2008.   In this transition to a unified AAUW brand, it is essential that states, branches and the national office adopt and use the current AAUW logo/acronym throughout our programs, presentations, publications, signage, stationary etc.
