Musings from Andie

Dear Ladies of the AAUW,

Hello there everyone!

I'm just writing a few words to let you know I think of you and I was very pleased with the turnout at the last meeting.  We must be doing something right, but offhand, I can't say what it is.  I have my agenda for my talk completed, and I will run it by Linda Frye.

WE should be starting write-read-write soon.  (Thank God for
D. Dashem or I would be lost!)

Did you join the weight loss classes at Curves?  Given up Milky Ways?  (Enclosed find an e-mail that came into the Museum)  At least I don't smoke.  If I had to buy both the Milky Ways and smoke I'd be broke in no time flat.  (How do people do it?)  I take it except for a few incidences we are alive and well.  Stay that way and come to the next meeting!

                                                Andie

Minutes of January 3, 2009
Meeting of the Lock Haven Branch of AAUW

Meeting was called to order by President Andi Bennett at 10:00 at the third floor Community Room of the Ross Library.  Each member was asked to introduce herself at the beginning of the meeting.  The program was conducted by C. W. Pollard who visited Siberia two years ago.  She spoke of an American colony that established itself in Siberia during the 1920s.  C. W. provided us with a map, pictures of this settlement, and stories of its inhabitants.

Members present were Andi Bennett, C. W. Pollard, Gerry Cierpilowski, Margaret Irwin, Pat Burd, Ellie Zimmerman, Laura Long, Diane Whitaker, Sharon Taylor, Joyce Hudson, Lois Day, Karyl Garner, JoAnne Marcinkevage, Michele Long, Betty Nelson, Angela Blck, Amy Carroll, Toni Tomasi, and Bonnie Rosamilia.  Perspective members Melody and Ophelia Fetter were also present.

A general meeting began at 10:30.  Minutes were presented in the Lockletter.  Angela Black reported that the Treasurer’s report would be in the next edition of the Lockletter.

Diane Whitaker reported on our next meeting which will be held on February 7, 2009, in the third floor Community Room of the Ross Library.  Carol Hildebrande and JoAnne Bowes will be speaking.  Beth Brobst has been working on a program for teaching tolerance.  This program will be held at a later date.  Diane reminded everyone that at the February meeting we will be voting for five Distinguished Women of Clinton County.  These women will be honored at our March meeting.  She also reminded all members that the April meeting will be a book discussion on The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

Membership:  Michele Long reported for the Membership Committee by introducing the guests at our meeting.  New membership forms are available from Michele and she will have them at our next meeting.

Book Sale:  Toni Tomasi reported on the Price & Sort.  She hopes to have it on Thursday, January 15.  She is also hopeful to have some more help from college students.  Books are now being collected in the lobby of the Ross Library.

Diversity:  JoAnne Marcinkevage had nothing to report.

Care & Concern:  Chairpersons, Betty Nelson and Gerry Cierpilowski, both reported on the health of Barb Breon.  All members are asked to remember her through thoughts and cards.

Andi Bennett reported that she and C. W. Pollard are working on the liaison with the college and high school.  In March or April, Andi is going to the high school to do a presentation on AAUW to junior or senior high school girls.  This will be a way to make the community more aware of AAUW and what it does for women within our community.  Linda Frye volunteered to help Andi with her presentation.

The list of women to be included in the vote for the five Distinguished Women of Clinton County was discussed.  Changes were made to the name, and the majority liked the name that it has been given.  Three names were added to include women from Western Clinton County.  They are Maria Gentzyel, Patti Rauch, and Merry Ann Olshefskie.  Again, the vote will be taken at the February meeting with the five top vote-getters being honored at the March meeting.  Any new suggestions are to be sent to Bonnie Rosamilia by January 15.

NEW BUSINESS

Write-Read-Write:  Laura Long is going to present the Write-Read-Write program to the students/teachers at Avis Elementary school this coming week.  She will have more information available at upcoming meetings.

Book Sale:  Toni Tomasi asked if any members had old, large pieces of linoleum available.  These are needed for the floor of the garage for the workers who are doing

Price & Sort.  The floor is gravel and protection is needed.  Toni reminded members that the rent for the garage is $40 per month and if anyone knows of anything else that is available for less, please contact her.  Sharon Taylor said that there is possible storage available at Lock Haven University.  Toni will do follow-up and try to find this.

Meeting was adjourned at 11:10.  Several members went to Ruby Tuesday for a luncheon social following the meeting.

READ-WRITE-READ

We visited the students at Avis Elementary on January 7 and told the 50 4th- and 5th-graders about our project.  They were quite excited to get started writing a letter to each of you.

On January 27th the letters will be picked up.  Then, we will match up the letters with those of you who have volunteered to select appropriate books for each of them.  These letters will be dispersed at the February 7th meeting.  (If you need, I can get the letters to you before that date.  Let me know.)

You will be able to bring the books to my house any time or bring them to the March 5th meeting.

The students are looking forward to receiving a short letter from you telling a little about yourself to go along with the book.

The students’ second letter will be available to you at the May AAUW meeting.

This is such a delightful project to do!   Help will be needed to deliver the books and get pictures.

If you haven't already signed up, I need a few more volunteers to buy books.   I will be making phone calls about this soon.

Thanks so very much!    Laura

*Organization Name and Logo

*As a signal of our move to transform and unify our organization, the organization will be using a common logo of the stylized W and the acronym "AAUW"

The transition to priority use of the acronym began in the spring of 2007, as part of the Strategic Process.  The Association and EF boards affirmed the logo/acronym change at their joint meeting Feb 22, 2008.   In this transition to a unified AAUW brand, it is essential that states, branches and the national office adopt and use the current AAUW logo/acronym throughout our programs, presentations, publications, signage, stationary etc.
