Musings from Andie

Dear Ladies,

I hope you are well. November will be upon us by the time you read this. I am pleased to say that
C. W. Pollard has the information about the college program regarding strengthening our ties to LHU.  I will be helping out.  I already have ideas about my presentations to the high school seniors and juniors.

At our next meeting, please bring along cash so we can donate money to buy a flock of chickens or a goat.  And we will have or try to have someone take a picture.

Also, at our next meeting, we will begin to discuss the new changes that national wants to put through. I will be attending that meeting next year in April.  And Jenn Meanor will speak on Sign Language.  Jenn is a Certified Deaf and Hard of Hearing Instructor. Perhaps another member?  Have an application ready for her!

As I said, I will be seeing you in November.  The trees will probably be bare.  We also have to vote for 5 people out of the Women in Clinton County list.  Bring your no-doze.  We will have plenty of work to do.

See you if the Lord is willing and the creek don't rise...

                                                      Andie

AAUW UPDATES

Celebrate the Foundation's 50th anniversary

For 50 years, the AAUW Educational Foundation has been breaking through barriers for women and girls.

undefinedIn 1958, the Educational Foundation was officially established to administer AAUW's fellowship and grant programs, advancing educational and professional opportunities for women in the United States and around the globe. Thanks to the generous contributions of AAUW members across the nation, the Foundation remains one of the world's largest funding sources for graduate women. Adding to this distinguished legacy, the Foundation also became the source for AAUW's landmark research reports and more recently, the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund program.

Minutes of October 2, 2008
Meeting of the Lock Haven Branch of AAUW

Meeting was called to order at 7:15 at the Community Room of the Ross Library.  Diane Mills from ACLU was introduced.  She, in turn, introduced a video which was the second in a series called “The Free Files – Protecting the Ballot.”  The video concentrated on voting requirements that are being proposed and used in several states such as requiring photo ID in Georgia.  Such changes would exclude many previous voters from voting in future elections – especially the elderly who do not have drivers’ licenses, the homeless, the poor who cannot afford to obtain a photo ID.  The video also discussed pre-clearance by the federal government on any such changes to state election laws.   Follow the video Diane Mills had a short question and answer period.  States currently requiring a photo ID are Georgia, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Michigan, South Dakota, and Louisiana.

Members present at the meeting were Andi Bennett, Diane Whitaker, Becky Gilbert, Toni Tomasi, Margaret Irwin, JoAnne Bowes, Beth Brobst, Linda Frye, Amy Carroll, Robert Doyle, and Bonnie Rosamilia.  Four guests from the community and university were also present for the video and discussion.

A general meeting was held following the video.  Several small corrections were made to the minutes from the last meeting.  Corrected minutes were approved on a motion by Becky Gilbert, seconded by Roberta Doyle.  Motion passed.

Treasurer Angela Black was unable to attend the meeting as her husband Alan is suffering from injuries following a fall.  There was no treasurer’s report available.

Diane Whitaker reported on upcoming meetings.  The next meeting will be on November 6, not the 13th, at the Great Island Presbyterian Church at 7:00.  This meeting will feature information on sign language from Lock Haven University.   The meeting for March will recognize five Clinton County women for their contributions in a variety of areas.  Bonnie distributed a tentative list of these women (see attached list).  If there are any additions to be made to this list, members are asked to contact Bonnie with those names before the next meeting.  At the next meeting, the final list will be presented and voting will be finalized at the December meeting.

Toni Tomasi reported on the Price & Sorts.  She needs more help from members.  At the last meeting there were more volunteers from the university than members present to help.  We have lost the use of Stella McMaster’s garage, but Tom McMaster has given us use of a smaller garage.

Care and Concern:  Beth Brobst thanked everyone who sent cards and well wishes to her following her recent surgery.  Beth also distributed several thank you cards from the scholarship recipients for this year.

Meeting Hostesses: Toni Tomasi passed around a list asking for volunteers to bring food for regular meetings.  The hostess box will provide coffee, tea, and paper products.  Snacks are needed.

Publicity: Andi is asking someone to volunteer to handle publicity for this year.  Several names were mentioned, but no one volunteered.  Please consider doing this.

Liason with LHU : Andi, with the help of C. W. Pollard, will be trying to arrange a liaison between Lock Haven University students and our local AAUW chapter.  The hope is to generate some interest in AAUW while students are still in college so they will join upon graduation.

Meeting was adjourned on a motion by Margaret Irwin, seconded by Roberta Doyle.  Motion passed.
