LOCKLETTER

AAUW  Lock Haven Branch

Lock Haven, PA

Andie Bennett, President

Editors:  Diane Whitaker & Bobbie Way

Musings from Andie

Greeting ladies!

I hope your summer went well and that you're refreshed.  And I realize you may have gone off your diets with all that ice cream down at Dairy Queen.  But I have high hopes for us.

Diane has come up with a great list of programs, and I've been busy trying to think up extra things we can get involved with so we can get our name in the paper, and with that, more exposure.  I am also willing, with permission of the club, to visit the two high schools in the area and talk to the older students about AAUW.  I have a sneaking suspicion that we should do this.

Also, I'll try to contact the AAUM.  I believe the local branch is in State College and if I make a few phone calls I could probably find a contact person to have a joint program or project.

Alright now...listen up.  Do a couple of push-ups, run around the block a few times, and lift some weights because we have a great year coming up and we have to be ship-shape.

And with that, roger, wilco, over and out!

                           Andie

First Meeting
Thursday
September 4

5:30 p.m.

Lock Haven Hospital’s Extended Care Community Room

Please bring a covered dish to share.  Your table service (plate, napkin, flatware, etc) will be supplied.

We look forward to a crowd and a wonderful start to a great year for our branch!

Directions to the Community Room
L.H. Hospital’s Extended Care Unit (ECU)

Facing the Hospital from Cree Drive (the hospital’s main entrance), the ECU is located on the west (right) side.  It is separated from the main building by a drive/underpass.

Use the entrance to the western-most parking lot (which leads directly into the ECU); ample parking should be available in that lot.  Enter through the ECU’s double-doors and walk straight ahead to the community room.

From the Educational FOUNDATION Chair...

The Lock Haven Branch of AAUW has awarded educational aid for 2008-09 to five outstanding women.  Four of the awardees are in graduate school, and one is pursuing a nursing career.

The undergraduate award is named in honor of Pamela Piette, a former member of our Branch, who is retired and lives in Illinois.  Pam continues to contribute to our scholarship fund annually.

Recipient of this year’s Pamela Piette Undergraduate Award is Ashley Greene.  Ashley is changing her career pathway from a teacher of physical education to become a registered nurse.  She is a student at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

The graduate awards are named in memory of Marilyn Gardner, a Lock Haven Branch past president and division (state) past president.  One of the awardees, Stephanie Reichelderfer, has completed her MA degree at Temple University, and is continuing on for her Ph.D. in history at the University of Maryland.  She hopes to pursue post-doctoral research and to teach at the college level.  Stephanie graduated from Lock Haven High School and Lock Haven University.  She is married and has summer employment as a reading teacher.  This fall, she will work part-time at the National Archives and Records Administration.

A second Marilyn Gardner Graduate Award goes to Julie Story, an instructor in the Department of Academic Development and Counseling at Lock Haven University.  Julie is pursuing her D.Ed. degree in Educational Leadership, with emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction, at the University of Phoenix Online.  Both Julie and Stephanie also won AAUW educational aid last year.  They are extremely enthusiastic about their academic work, and have big plans for the future.

A third Marilyn Gardner Graduate Award goes to Gail Hanlon.  Gail is a legislative aide in Mike Hanna’s Lock Haven office.  She has two teenage boys, one in college at Lock Haven University.  Hoping to expand her ability to provide community outreach services, Gail is beginning a Master of Liberal Arts degree at LHUP this fall.

The fourth recipient of a Marilyn Gardner Graduate Award is Megan Smith, who graduated from Penn State as an English major.  Megan plans to take a Master’s of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Bloomsburg University.

The Lock Haven Branch of AAUW is grateful to Thrivent Financial which matched $1600 of our Book Sale dollars.  Many thanks go out to all our members and others who helped at the Book Sale, with special thanks to Chairpersons Toni Tomasi and Carol Hildebrand.  Thanks also to the Educational Aid Awards Committee members:  Amy Carroll, Carol Hildebrand, Jackie Whitling, Michele Long, and Roberta Doyle.  They worked thoughtfully and diligently to assure that the awards were fair and appropriate.

Most of the award recipients will be able to attend the September dinner meeting.  Please plan to come and give them a warm welcome.

Beth Brobst, Chair, Educational Foundation

Nell Carnein will be coming to Lock Haven in late September.  She is hoping to get together with any of our members who are able to have lunch at Ruby Tuesday on Wednesday, September 24, at 11:30.  Please let Toni (726-6410) or Bobbie (748-4905) know by 9/22.  If you are unable to stop for lunch, but would like to see Nell, let us know and we will try to help facilitate it.
